The Leeds Station Sustainable Travel Gateway scheme will see an investment of <a data-uw-rm-brl="false" href="http://£39.5">&pound;</a>46.1 million to significantly improve the station&rsquo;s main entrance and surrounding area. With the number of rail passengers using the station forecast to increase significantly, the works are necessary to meet capacity demands and ensure that people can enter, exit and wait for services safely.New Station Street will become a much improved and more pedestrian-friendly environment. Service deliveries and emergency service access will continue. The area&rsquo;s appearance and visibility will be improved and a variety of access options provided, including the installation of wider, safer steps outside the entrance of the station and two large passenger lifts.New cycle infrastructure will promote sustainable active travel, encouraging people to walk and cycle more often and contributing to the Climate Emergency agenda. Accessible benches and seating will improve the environment surrounding the station, helping to create an attractive destination and a modern gateway to the city centre, South Bank and beyond.The improvements will be delivered by Leeds City Council, in partnership with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and Network Rail as land owner, via the Department for Transport&rsquo;s Transforming Cities Fund. The works are due to be completed in 2025.At the same time, Network are carrying out essential maintenance to reinforce the underground structure beneath New Station Street which supports much of the station above it. Detailed designs are still being finalised and are subject to change.Pedestrian improvementsThe more pedestrian-friendly environment on New Station Street will help people to move safely between the station and the surrounding areas, without having to cross a busy road to get to the taxi rank. The whole of New Station Street is to be pedestrianised, including the section which meets Boar Lane, providing a more pedestrian-friendly route to the relocated bus stops with improved wayfinding, and also creating direct pedestrian routes between the station entrance and the South Bank area which will reduce journey times.New seating of different types and heights will also be installed on New Station Street, providing different rest areas.New Station Street will benefit from improved lighting and contrasting floor materials, providing separation between the road and pavement to help people with visual impairments. It is designed to allow passengers to access vehicles from the kerbside, which will help people with wheelchairs or assistance dogs to board more easily, as well as those with luggage. A luggage trolley park will be located directly outside of the station entrance on New Station Street.The new rank will also allow for the front three vehicles to leave at the same time. This will make it easier for passengers to board vehicles, which is more efficient than the existing layout.The taxi rank shelter will offer seating for 15 people, and at different heights, with sufficient room for wheelchairs to easily manoeuvre.The new rank will be fed by a feeder rank on Swinegate and Sovereign Street. This will accommodate the same number of taxis as the existing rank, and will allow taxis to feed into the new rank quickly.Bus services will be relocated to Boar Lane. Providing an accessible, attractive and cleaner alternative to car journeys is at the heart of the TCF, and it is estimated that its schemes will improve journeys by bus, rail, bike and on foot for up to 1.5 million people, take up to 12 million car trips per year off our roads and reduce CO2 emissions from car travel by up to 15,000 tonnes by 2036.The Leeds City Region TCF is being delivered by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority in partnership with local authorities and will be funded through &pound;317 million from the Department for Transport (DfT) plus local match funding up to &pound;140 million.

Plan ahead - how to drive to Leeds City Station

Motorist routes to Leeds City Station

If you need to drive to Leeds City Rail Station, we encourage you to plan your journey in advance.The drop-off area at Princes Square is shared with taxis and private hire vehicles, and motorists are encouraged to allow extra time for their journey. You can also no longer drive to the station via Neville Street and Bishopgate Street, following changes to the local road network.The pick-up area for passengers is at the multi-storey car park located on Aire Street. If you&rsquo;re waiting to pick someone up, you can make use of the free 10-minute grace period. After that charges apply.To drive to the station:<ul id="isPasted"><li>If you are travelling from the M621, use junction 2 and follow the A643 before joining the A58(M) and briefly the A58(M) Inner Ring Road, before leaving to rejoin the A58. Exit the A58 to Wellington Street and follow signs to the Station via Northern Street and Whitehall Road which then becomes Aire Street. This is the red route on the below map.</li></ul><ul><li>If you are travelling from the east of the city, we would recommend joining the A64(M) ring road westbound and continuing onto the A58(M) Inner Ring Road. Exit the A58 to Wellington Street and follow signs to the Station via Northern Street and Whitehall Road which then becomes Aire Street. This is the green route on the below map.</li></ul><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/commonplace-digital-limited/image/upload/v1684508736/projects/5fac08f73270b76286d3c528/btiqqqh6uqbhb7njlzfd.jpg" class="fr-fic fr-dib" data-uw-rm-ima="ai-w">Bishopgate Street closure to private vehiclesFollowing changes to roads around City Square, private vehicles can no longer drive to Princes Square via Neville Street and Bishopgate Street (the roads immediately outside the station), and past the Queens Hotel.Any private vehicles travelling in this direction will pass through a bus gate and incur a fixed penalty notice.Motorists who need to drive towards the city in that direction (such as via junction 3 of the M621, Meadow Road and Victoria Road) are now being re-routed. After crossing the Neville Street bridge over the river, motorists must turn right at the bus gate onto Sovereign Street before turning left onto Swinegate. The northern section of New Station Street between the station&rsquo;s main entrance and City Square is closing to pedestrians from Thursday 24 August&nbsp; to allow Network Rail to carry out essential works to the road.The works are being carried out at the same time as the Sustainable Travel Gateway scheme to minimise long-term disruption.Closing the northern section of New Station Street means you will not be able to turn left as you leave the station&rsquo;s main entrance and walk towards the city centre.Instead you can:<ul><li>Walk towards Boar Lane from the station&rsquo;s main entrance by turning right and travelling along the other side of New Station Street. This is the blue line on our map.</li></ul>&nbsp;<ul><li>Use the station&rsquo;s northern entrance (past the restaurants and Wetherspoon pub) to reach City Square, Infirmary Street, Park Row and Wellington Street. This installation space has provided a unique opportunity to showcase artwork celebrating the culture, industrial heritage and people of Leeds (particularly our communities within the south of the city) and further underpins the identity of Leeds as a culturally vibrant and creative city.&nbsp;This installation comprises a gallery wall featuring ten unique works of art. The artists have undertaken a considerable amount of engagement with communities in the development of their artwork which is represented in the final designs. A video on each of the following pages explains how each artist took inspiration from engagement with the community and the methodology behind their work.&nbsp;The commissioning of artwork has been a collaborative exercise undertaken in partnership with Leeds City Council, the Leeds Civic Trust, Network Rail, the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and local Councillors. &nbsp;The Neville Street arch structure remains a Network Rail asset, and Network Rail will be responsible for the management of the space following installation. &nbsp;The artwork was unveiled in October 2023 as part of the city&rsquo;s Year of Culture.

This fact, combined with a love of illustration, has always appealed to Chloe and Abigail because they could communicate whatever they imagined without limits. They could use imagery.Buttercrumble is an award-winning creative studio founded by (twin sisters) Abigail and Chloe Baldwin. Buttercrumble likes to employ its expertise in human-centric design and co-creation. They show how beauty, play and functionality can exist in harmony. The team has loved achieving this for organisations such as John Lewis, Chester Zoo and Mamas &amp; Papas. As well as exhibiting in London and Hong Kong.Before moving to Leeds, the twins were born and bred in the sunny seaside town of Scarborough. In 2016, they both graduated from the University of Leeds with a BA (Hons) in Graphic and Communication Design before establishing Buttercrumble in 2017.Buttercrumble wants to empower others to follow their dreams, and so, adopts a young-at-heart, optimistic vibe within their work. He received an MA from Wimbledon College of Art, University Arts London in 2011.&nbsp;Joss says certain images and lines recur in his mind, some charged with emotion more than others. The song of one bird, the leap of one fish, at a particular place and time, the scent of one flower, an old man and woman on a mountain path, kids seen through an open window playing basketball, or an old man reading a paper, these memories have symbolic meaning. But it&#39;s the poetic imagery he looks for.Joss has exhibited at &lsquo;The Bowery&rsquo; Leeds 2022, The Ferens Open, Ferens Gallery Hull, 2020; &lsquo;There is Another Sky&rsquo;, Granary Art Gallery, Western Park, 2018; Eureka! His paintings are mixed media, watercolour, pen and printmaking. Andy has had a number of challenges recently including overcoming cancer, but he draws his inspiration through art and local art communities. Andy lives in Garforth and has always been a part of South Leeds communities with his children gr up in BeestonAndy&#39;s work is inspired by the world and an interest in living things. The subjects portrayed in his works don&rsquo;t exist in nature; they are abstractions from how he sees them. Her artwork focuses on the natural world around her and uses a combination of different printing techniques such as cyanotype, monoprint and collagraph. When she isn&rsquo;t in the print room, she enjoys long walks, pressing flowers and finding colour palettes in unexpected places. In 2022, Natalie co-founded Still Studio; a workshop space in the city centre, encouraging creativity into the everyday and welcoming everyone to try something new, learn a skill or take a moment out through workshops hosted by a network of other creatives. Gender equality, sustainability and local history are prominent themes in her work. She has a Fine Arts degree from Nottingham Trent University and a PGCE in Art and Design from Reading University. Chris has taught art and design extensively throughout her career and currently teaches painting and printmaking classes at Leeds Print Workshop, an independent print cooperative.Since 2017 Chris has practised as a full-time artist and works from her central Leeds studio based at East Street Arts. Trained as a painter she enjoys working within a range of media such as painting, iPad and printmaking. She loves to draw and paint the figure and has undertaken many portrait commissions.In 2020 she was delighted to be chosen as a contestant on the popular television series Sky Portrait Artist of the Year in which she painted the actor Zawe Ashton.Her work is characterised by strong and intuitive use of colour, rhythm and energy.
